Given the importance of continuous development and capacity building to business success, the Anguilla Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACOCI) organised and hosted another timely and relevant workshop for its members. The ‘Train the Trainers’ workshop focused on optimising business opportunities through empowering the supervisory level. The two-day workshop was held on April 23rd and 24th at the Disaster Preparedness Conference Room.
The sessions were fittingly led by Mr. J. Christopher Richardson, Founder and Managing Director of Rich Pearl Global Training, Coaching and Consultancy Group. Mr. Richardson is a certified trainer, coach, public speaker and author. Participants represented a range of local businesses and governmental organisations and were actively engaged in discussions and activities throughout the sessions.
Over the two-day period, participants gained an understanding of the role and responsibilities of a professional trainer, appropriate training methods, how Gen X and Gen Y generations prefer to learn and the different attitudes, skills and knowledge a professional trainer needs to be successful. They also learnt how to use their body language and voice effectively, handle pre-training nervousness and the appropriate techniques to manage tough participants. Delivery methods included self-discovery and critique, group exploration and facilitator led discussions, practical exercises and case studies. Participant evaluations were favorable with many highly recommending the workshop for other institutions. Participants also shared that the workshop was delivered with exuberance and energy.
The training programme provided the groundwork for trainers to begin developing and refining their training and facilitation skills, with a variety of methods, to deliver the best learning experiences and improve learner engagement and retention. It is often purported that the most effective tool that can be used to increase productivity is training. The goal of the workshop was to build a strong foundation and empower trainers to continue to develop their practical skills over time as training is necessary to move any organisation along the continuum of excellence.
Mr. Richardson expressed that the work shop was a rewarding experience for both himself and staff. He further stated that ‘It is very important to note that conducting a training session requires specific skills and knowledge of how people learn. It is vital that middle and upper management have the knowledge and skill to train their teams; hence we state that training must be an ongoing activity. The need for outside trainers on a continual basis is a costly exercise and giving managers the training tools can help reduce such cost. It is indeed a cost saving benefit that at the same time positively impact productivity.’
