ACOCI Business Feature – T’s House of Beauty Salon and Spa

T’s House of Beauty Salon and Spa is a local cosmetic business specialising in hair and skincare founded by Mrs. Athenia Wilson. Athenia credits her Jamaican roots for her love of exaggerated hairstyles which explains her fondness for Tina Turner style wigs. Following a long and diverse career in hospitality, Athenia decided the time was right to follow her dreams and turn her love for hair and skincare into a viable business and in December 2020, T’s House of Beauty Salon and Spa was borne.  Athenia is married to chef and pastor William Wilson from the Bahamas.

At T’s House of Beauty Salon and Spa, your entire body, from your head to your toes, is their business. The list of services provided by T’s House of Beauty Salon and Spa include perms, treatments, braiding, natural hair care, body waxing, manicures and pedicures, facials and massages. Gift certificates are also available.

The salon and spa employs highly efficient and trained staff are who skilled in their respective cosmetic niches, some with backgrounds in the hospitality sector. The salon and spa also features a mini boutique stand in the foyer. From the boutique, customers can purchase Juvia’s Place make-up palettes, wireless earphones, handbags, Ardyss and Avon products.

On the best business advice she has received, Athenia shared:

The best advice was given to me by Mrs. Lisa Webster, owner of Mini Lisa Bath & Body, who said to me, ‘Tina, before you consider opening this business, make up your mind to be there every day.’ I am very grateful to Lisa for this advice. As a newly launched business, the employees can’t catch your vision rapidly, so being physically present makes a world of difference for the customer’s experience and employee’s full understanding of the business goals we want to achieve.”

For Athenia, one of the greatest benefits of launching T’s House of Beauty Salon and Spa has been the feelings of pride and joy that come with owning and operating a business that she really enjoys. She shared, “I love the jingling sound my keys make as I unlock the door to my business every morning. It gives me butterflies each time. “

Another major benefit of owning her business has been that she is able to attend church every Sunday to give God thanks and praise, which was something she was unable to do working the shift system in hospitality.

Athenia furthered shared, “I am amazed at how well we have taken off for a new entity. The support of past co-workers and the public at large has been tremendous. Special thanks to Andy of Hi-Tek Signs & Designs.

While T’s House of Beauty Salon and Spa has experienced many benefits since its inception, one of the key challenges the business faces is finding really committed employees.

As a hospitality veteran, Athenia understands the importance of ensuring high standards of customer service. She noted, “My experiences working in the hospitality industry for so many years has taught me the do’s and don’ts of customer service. At T’s House of Beauty Salon and Spa we rock when it comes to delivering high value customer service!

On her top business tip for aspiring entrepreneurs, Athenia highlighted, “Always wear a smile as a part of your daily appearance. Go after what you desire, be honest with your clients (lies do come back to haunt the business) and invest in good customer service training. Too many businesses in Anguilla have fallen short in this area and the result is mediocre service that is a turn off.”

Within the next decade, T’s House of Beauty Salon and Spa hopes to expand to own a building with a full service beauty spa, sauna, steam room and paraffin pool.

Owner of T’s House of Beauty Salon and Spa, Mrs. Athenia Wilson, shared these final words for the general public;
